Romford Raiders proved too strong for Invicta to lift the Kent & Essex Cup at the weekend.

Adam Laishram's National League side raced into a 5-0 lead in the opening period in Kent on Saturday, against their Division One South rivals.

And after skating off as 10-4 winners in the first leg, they claimed a 6-1 victory back at the Sapphire Ice & Leisure Centre on Sunday, with 16-year-old goalie Max van Mullem less than two minutes away from a shutout on his home debut.

Former Raiders captain Aaron Connolly, now leading home-town club Invicta, liked what he saw from the boys in gold and blue.

"It was always going to be an uphill, hard task for us but I feel like we gave a good account of ourselves," he said.

"There is a skill difference, you could see that in both games, but hopefully it was still a good run out for the Raiders.

"From my point of view it's nice to be back here and have another game here in front of the fans.

"I loved every minute I was here, I can't fault any of my time here, I was really looked after, the boys in the room were always great, I loved it.

"It was a really good time while it lasted. Thanks for the six years of fun.

"It looks like the club have taken another step which is fantastic to see. From the outside looking in, it looks like you're in really good hands."

Andrew Shewfelt got the ball rolling in the first leg with a powerplay goal on six minutes, with Jake Sylvester and Laishram netting 82 seconds apart to make it 3-0 midway through the first stanza.

Shewfelt grabbed his second then set up Shaun Miller, as former Raiders goalie Brad Windebank was bombarded with 28 shots in the opening 20 minutes - and 62 in total on the night.

But Invicta got on the board before the first break through Vilius Krakauskas.

Jacob Ranson, Shewfelt and Tjay Anderson added to the Raiders tally in the middle session, as the hosts also struck twice.

And Shewfelt and Laishram took the visitors into double figures before the Dynamos grabbed a last-minute reply.

Raiders included Joe Tomalin in their line-up for the home leg, after his appearances for Great Britain Under-20s in challenge matches against Solway on the previous two evenings.

And they needed only 15 seconds to open the scoring as Miller collected a diagonal pass from Thomas Relf on the left wing and cut inside to beat Owen Rider.

They could not add to their tally before the first break, despite dominating the shot count 21-9, and tempers frayed early in the second period.

Sylvester and Elliott Dewey were handed roughing minors, along with Richard Harris and Taylor Chard, and an additional tripping call against Sylvester gave Dynamos a powerplay chance.

But another long pass from Relf sent Shewfelt away to double the Raiders lead while shorthanded and the Canadian forward struck again just 45 seconds later.

Sylvester, having climbed above Kyle Amyotte into seventh place in the club's all-time scoring list the night before, added a simple fourth just past the midway mark.

And Shewfelt completed his second hat-trick of the weekend from Anderson's behind-the-net feed with 30 seconds left on the clock.

Relf and Shewfelt combined to tee up Miller for a strong wristshot finish to make it 6-0, with 10 minutes still to play.

But Dynamos had the last word, after Chard was binned for boarding, as Mads Thune claimed a shorthanded consolation to deny the impressive van Mullem his clean sheet.
