Romford Buccaneers head coach Jason Buckman admitted to having mixed feelings after their latest efforts in National League Division One South.
The young side skated to a convincing 11-3 win over Oxford City Stars at Romford's Sapphire Ice & Leisure Centre on Saturday, led by seven points from Tjay Anderson.
But they were made to pay by Essex rivals Chelmsford the following night, falling to a 5-2 derby defeat at the Riverside.
"It was a mixed feelings kind of weekend," said Buckman.
"Saturday against Oxford we really showed how we can be clinical in front of goal and it was nice to see goals across the line-up.
"After a slow start and once we got level, it didn’t look like the game would go any other way."
Oxford opened the scoring inside five minutes, but Anderson - playing down from the senior Raiders - netted twice to put Buccs in front.
And although the visitors got back on terms just nine seconds after Anderson's second goal, Brynley Capps and Joe Tomalin struck to make it 4-2 at the first break.
Capps and Luca Pascale added further goals in the middle period, before Anderson struck twice more either side of a third from Capps in the final stanza.
And after Oxford claimed their third, Nathan Long and Ewan Hill completed the scoring in the closing minutes.
Buccaneers began well in Chelmsford, but did not get the rewards and trailed 2-1 at the first break after Donald Campbell replied to Cameron Bartlett's brace.
The home side added three more goals in the middle session, before Anderson claimed a consolation in the final period.
"I was really pleased with Sunday's performance in Chelmsford," added Buckman.
"I thought we dominated the possession and chances in the first period and could’ve easily gone into the first intermission two or three goals up.
"The second period was Chelmsford's turn to have possession and the difference is they finished their chances.
"We won the final period 1-0 which was small consolation but overall I cannot fault our desire to compete with the big budget teams."
Buccaneers are due to host Chelmsford in a return meeting on Saturday (5.15pm) in their final outing of 2023.
But Capps and Tomalin were due to play for Great Britain U18s against France in a pair of friendlies in Sheffield, ahead of their World Championships next year.
"It's amazing recognition for Bryn and Joe and thoroughly deserved," said Buckman.
"They have taken to playing in a senior league amongst experienced players and compete every night, don’t look out of place and put up the points.
"They are great guys and really coachable with the right attitude."
