Award winners named tonight

In just a few hours time, the winners of the Havering Sports Council’s 2010 awards will be unveiled.

The annual presentation ceremony is to be held at Upminster Golf Club tonight and competition in the eight categories once again looks fierce.

This year’s list of hopefuls also covers a wide range of sports.

In the Junior Female section, Romford Town swimmer Amy Marren goes up against karate’s Aimee Sell and Havering Mayesbrook athlete Georgie Taylor.

The Junior Male category has a water-based theme, with divers Stuart Brown and Daniel Gorsuch both nominated alongside rower Seb Adams.

Competitor of the Year honours will be fought out between runner Faye Fullerton, cyclist Kevin Gill and Mark Nullmeyers, who won a national bowls title for Elm Park last year.

The athletic teams from Ardleigh Green and Clockhouse contest the Primary School award with Newtons netballers, while the Senior School prize is a three-way fight between Coopers Coborn girls hockey team, Frances Bardsley’s football team and the trampolinists of Hall Mead.

Havering Mayesbrook — previous winners in many categories — are up against the Bowmen of Ardleigh and Broxhill Archery clubs in the Sports Club of the Year section, while the Volunteer of the Year prize honours Viv Allaway (netball), Irene Brennan (athletics) and Giorgio Bugnatelli (tennis).

Romford Raiders player-coach Danny Marshall is a finalist in the Doug Riden Lifetime Achievement award, after becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer in his 17th season on ice.

Marshall, 33, goes up against Ronald Engstrom and Dale Sharp, who have given devoted service to swimming and football refereeing.
