Marren recognised at London event

Havering youngster Amy Marren won the Inspirational Performance of the Year award at the London Awards for Sport & Physical Activity last night.

Paralympic swimmer Marren was recognised for her competitive achievements, including four gold and two silver medals at the IPC World Championships in Canada, as well as her community work with London-wide sports charity Greenhouse and the Danny Green Fund, which supports children under 16 who suffer from Posterior Fossa syndrome.

Greenhouse chief executive and founder Michael de Giorgio won the Outstanding Voluntary Contribution award, sponsored by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, in recognition of his significant voluntary contribution to community sport and physical activity.

De Giorgio was rewarded for his dedication to providing high quality sports coaching to disadvantaged communities across London and, along with Marren, was among over 500 nominations across 10 categories.

The judges, selected from sports development organisations across London, praised the quality of the nominees, with other winners including London City Runners, awarded the Club of the Year award, and Chris Facey, named Coach of the Year.

This year’s event, held at the Lee Valley VeloPark, was hosted by TV Presenter Caroline Pearce and included a headline speech from British sprinter and current British 100m record holder Montell Douglas.

Guests were also treated to displays and taster sessions provided by GLL, the awards’ Community Participation Partner, including cycling, rowing, cheerleading, gymnastics and table tennis.
