Havering’s Kieran O’Hara and Rebecca O’Rourke both had plenty to cheer at the Mencap National Championships in Doncaster on Saturday.

O’Rourke was making her first appearance at the event and won gold in both the 200 metres and 1,500m.

And O’Hara added gold in the 1,500m, as well as silvers in the 400m and 800m and a bronze in the long jump.

Club athletes added more medals to their relay haul won the previous evening at Saturday’s Eastern Counties Championships at Peterborough.

Bella Smith won gold in the under-15 girls’ 100m in a new best of 12.68s and there were silver medals for Matthew Blacklock in the boys’ 1500m in a best of 4.26.74, Jess Collier in the pole vault and Paige Robinson in the high jump.

Jacob Blanc won bronze in the 200m in a personal best.

*Havering athletes are preparing for another busy weekend of action, with the men in British League action for the third time at Bedford on Saturday.

The women face a difficult trip to Liverpool for their next UK League fixture on Sunday, when the table-topping EYAL squad face a tough test at Hendon against hosts Shaftesbury Barnet among others.

They will be missing several under-17s who are on Essex Inter Counties duty, while other team members face a long journey back on Saturday night after representing Coopers Coborn and other schools in the English Schools’ Cup Final at Gateshead.
