The latest news from the Falcon Kickboxing Club
Falcon youngster Freddie Fisher had reason to celebrate after winning his category at the WKU English Open Championship.
Fisher was one of three members of the Romford-based club to compete at the national event along with James Foakes and Bobby Poulloura.
All three Falcon fighters were competing at the national championships under K1 (Unified) Kickboxing rules.
In his first fight in the junior category, Fisher showed his dominance with a superior display of varied kicking to progress to the final.
Fisher was prepared for a difficult bout in the final, but was handed the win when his opponent had to withdraw due to an injury sustained in his previous fight.
Foakes, meanwhile, came away from the event with a bronze medal to show for his efforts.
The competition for Foakes began in the quarter-finals, where he defeated his opponent on points.
The win, though, came at a cost as the Falcon man sustained a foot injury in the bout that he carried through to the semi-finals.
Foakes battled bravely despite the ailment as he gave another determined display in a bout that again went the distance.
However, Foakes was unable to win on points for a second time and instead had to make do with his bronze medal.
Poulloura, meanwhile, was always likely to be up against at the event owing to his limited kickboxing experience.
Though he was beaten on points in his opening bout, Poulloura will have learned plenty from competing at the national championships.
The medals for Fisher and Foakes capped an historic year for the club in which fellow member Sarah Worsfold became IKF K1 European champion.
Other highlights in 2018 included Gareth Evans capping his full-contact kickboxing career by capturing the WKMA world super welterweight championship with a 12-round master class against Argentina’s Falco Villafane.
The club will hope for more success in 2019.
