A Canning Town club that lost its licence after women were allegedly raped has been defeated in its appeal against the decision.

Pier One, in Bidder Street North, had its licence removed in November 2023 after a judge ruled that a "total lack of care from staff" may have contributed to two alleged rapes within months of each other.

Newham Council said both it and the Metropolitan Police had concerns over  the venue's ability to ensure the safety of female customers.

Nightclub operator Sahara Promotions lodged a High Court appeal, which the council defended.

Newham said an appeal from the landlord of the premises was allowed subject to conditions, that the landlord would need to apply for a variation and appoint a new operator to be considered for a licence.

Cllr Amar Virdee, cabinet member for community safety and crime, said: “Venues like pubs and clubs have a clear duty to prevent crime and disorder and act as guardians to customers who may be vulnerable as a result of drinking alcohol.

"Established procedures and training of staff are essential to combat a national epidemic of violence against women and girls.

“This successful action in the courts shows that in Newham we will take vigorous action against those who fail in their obligation to keep customers safe."

We were unable to contact Sahara Promotions for a comment but contacted Pier One, who did not respond.
