Havering Council has no plans to develop public park land in the borough, a meeting was told.

Councillor Barry Mugglestone, cabinet member for environment, was asked by Cllr John Tyler whether the council administration has "any current plans (whether published or not) to sell, otherwise dispose of, or build homes or commercial buildings, on land within any council owned public parks, gardens or similar?"

After confirming to the full council meeting on November 20 that there are no plans to dispose of or develop any park land, Cllr Mugglestone said: "However, we would consider opportunities to maximise the use and income for existing facilities.

A supplementary question saw Cllr Tyler allege that Cllr Mugglestone told a meeting with bowls clubs last month that the authority would have to consider selling off parks for housing due to its financial position.

"Never ever did I say that we'd sell off any parks for housing", replied an indignant Cllr Mugglestone.

"I don't know where the councillor gets that information from but it is incorrect."
