People in Barking and Dagenham have been urged not to disregard a letter from the council amid scam fears. 

It comes after residents across the borough have been sent a letter explaining how they can claim £300 for winter fuel payments. 

The letters have been headed: "Re: Winter Fuel replacement payment: Invitation to claim". 

Recent cuts to the payment has meant that those ineligible for Pension Credit will no longer receive the universal tax-free payment. 

The document reads: "The council is supporting residents who will now not currently (receive) a Winter Fuel Payment with a one-off payment of £300 and you have been identified as eligible to claim this payment. 

"To claim this payment, please complete our online application form. We cannot provide paper application forms. 

"To make a claim for Winter Fuel Payment, please go to the following link or by using your phone to scan the QR code."

The letter sparked concerns online after being shared to social media groups, with many voicing their fears that it is part of a scam. 

Some Facebook users picked up on a spelling mistake within the letter, raising red flags for many. 

Barking and Dagenham Council has confirmed to this paper that eligible residents across the borough have been sent an opportunity to claim £300 for winter fuel payments and the letter is not a scam.

A spokesperson for the council said: "Residents are required to input bank account details only via an online application and all information is stored securely and is fully trackable and auditable.

"The letter includes contact details for residents to get further information and support from the council.

"We understand that unfortunately there are lots of scams taking place, and residents may have concerns, but we can reassure residents that this is a genuine letter from the council and the payment link is secure.

"We would always encourage residents to contact the council if they have any concerns about potential scams relating to council services."
