Hundreds of residents have objected to plans for a new quarry after the proposals sparked concern from those living nearby.

Plans for a quarry at Rainham Lodge Farm in Upminster (P1251.24), involving the extraction of sand and gravel from the former farmland, have been met with 471 objections and 12 comments in total.

This was before the previous deadline for responses on October 22, however Havering Council has now confirmed that the deadline for comments on this application is November 7.

Planning documents submitted alongside the application reveal that the quarry in Berwick Pond Road would be around 550,000 square metres in size - or around as big as 2,000 tennis courts.

The proposals would also see six HGV lorries - each carrying up to 20 tonnes of sand and gravel - travelling along Berwick Pond Road and Launders Lane to the current Rainham Quarry site every hour.

The huge number of objections submitted by residents follows Margaret Mullane voicing opposition to the quarry plan.

The Dagenham and Rainham MP said in a letter to Havering Council's planning department that she "cannot in good conscience allow this to go unchallenged".

A Facebook group opposing the plans, called Say No To The Quarry, already has almost 2,400 members.

Kevin Sugrue, who runs the group, is urging residents to send in their objections to the quarry to "make a change for the better - for yourself, your safety, your neighbours and family, and the future of people in Havering".

Residents can email their response to the proposals to planning@havering.gov.uk, quoting the planning application reference P1251.24, until November 7.

Brett did not respond to the Recorder's request for comment.
