A zebra crossing has been proposed for a second major road in Romford where drivers are found to "regularly" reach speeds of up to 50mph.

Havering Council has put forward a new safety improvement scheme for Mawney Road, which would see a zebra crossing installed, as well as textured paving to help those with visual impairments.

The proposed crossing also includes illuminated Belisha beacon posts to alert drivers to its presence.

It follows a similar scheme for North Street, which again proposes a zebra crossing and Belisha beacons.

A study by the council found that drivers on both roads "regularly" reached speeds of up to 50 mph.

Up to 1,100 vehicles per hour use Mawney Road, according to the council's study, while analysis of collision records also showed that 16 "personal injury accidents" were recorded along the street.

Of these crashes, one was serious, three involved pedestrians, four happened in wet conditions and five occurred when it was dark.

The council did not provide a timescale for when its study took place or for how long.
