A nursery company founded by Jas Athwal has been found to have breached child safety regulations, according to Ofsted.

According to Companies House, Village Day Nurseries Ltd was set up in September 2007.

Jas (Jasbir) Athwal has been listed as one of two directors of the company since September 2007.

The nursery chain is understood to operate three sites in Essex and Derby, providing care for around 100 under fives at each location.

The Times has reported that all three nurseries have come under fire from Ofsted in recent years.

After a concern was raised in February 2023, the nursery is said to have "revised the procedures for supervising children".

Another concern was published to the website relating to "an event that affected the suitability of a person working with children" at Leigh Village Day Nursery, Leigh-on-Sea in March 2021.

An inspection of the nursery on January 27, 2023 rated the day care as 'Good'.

In October 2023, Ofsted published details of a complaint received for The Orchard Garden Private Day Nursery in Derby.

According to the public document, the nursery was discovered to have failed to meet some legal requirements after concerns were raised in September that year.

The concerns resulted in the practice reviewing "the arrangements for protecting children's safety on outings".

It comes as the former leader of Redbridge Council continues to face scrutiny over his property dealings, after tenants have claimed to be living with mould and ant infestations.

Mr Athwal has addressed the claims, saying he is "profoundly sorry" and "shocked" by the reports.

All nurseries have since taken action and been ranked as good.
