A road has been closed after a former landfill site in Rainham caught fire again.

An area of wasteland 50 metres wide is on fire at Launders Lane - a site which is plagued by fires, especially during warmer weather.

Four fire engines and 25 firefighters were called to the scene at around 1.30pm today (September 19) and were still trying to get the fire under control at 3pm.

A 32m turntable ladder is being used as an observation tower to fight the fire from above.

New Road is closed from Lambs Lane North to Launders Lane, with the London Fire Brigade urging people to avoid the area if they can.

The brigade has also asked residents to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke.

The Recorder has previously spoken to people who live near the Launders Lane site about their health concerns due to the frequent fires and smoke coming off the landfill.

Crews from Wennington, Dagenham, Hornchurch and Greenwich fire stations are helping to fight the fire at the scene.
