Hornchurch town centre has been brightened up by a team of volunteers ready for the autumn.

Volunteers from the group Havering Green Streets, alongside Havering councillors Christine Smith, John Wood and Bryan Vincent, filled the concrete planters along High Street and Billet Lane with a selection of plants on Friday (September 6).

The Green Streets team, who aim to brighten up Havering's green spaces and streets, began by removing old bricks and rocks from the planters, which were then loaded into Councillor Vincent's car to take to the recycling centre.

Councillor Vincent, who represents the St Andrews ward, said: "It is accepted it is a bit late in the season to plant up the planters some ten in number, but they were looking in such a sorry state they needed to be brightened up.

"In the spring the team will revisit, tidy up those plants that have survived the winter and plant up new plants in any missing spaces."

Cllr Smith also asked nearby shopkeepers to water the plants during any dry spells.

Next month, the group hope to fill the larger black steel planters from the junction with Billet Lane up to Lidl.
