A greengrocers and a takeaway in Romford are among Havering's worst-rated businesses for food hygiene standards in August.

Green Grocery, in South Street, scored a one out of five for its food hygiene - meaning "major improvement" is necessary - after an inspection from the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Three other businesses in Havering, including a takeaway and a bartending service, received a rating of between one and three out of five last month.

However, the majority of the 32 Havering businesses inspected by food safety officers in August were rated as having "good" or "very good" hygiene standards.

Below is a detailed look at the lowest-rated Havering businesses in August:

Green Grocery - 1/5

Green Grocery, in South Street, was given a score of one by the FSA, meaning "major improvement" is necessary, after its inspection on August 9.

The food safety officer deemed that improvement was necessary in two categories - hygienic food handling and cleanliness of facilities - while major improvement was needed in the management of food safety.

We were unable to contact Green Grocery for comment.

Cookin Lab - 1/5

This takeaway shop in Quadrant Arcade also scored a one out of five after an FSA inspection on August 9.

Cookin Lab, which serves burgers, wraps and other comfort food, was told that it needed "major improvement" in its system or checks that ensure food sold is safe to eat.

The Recorder contacted Cookin Lab for comment.

Kerry's Cookout and Cocktails - 1/5 

This bartending and bar hire service was given a one overall by the Food Standards Agency, as well as for its management of food safety, after an inspection on August 5.

However, the business' hygienic food handling and cleanliness of facilities were both judged as "good" and "very good" by inspectors.

A spokesperson for Kerry's Cookout and Cocktails said: "It was just making sure all of our barbecue chefs have got the Level 2 [Food Hygiene & Safety] qualification.

"Everything will be put in place and we are going to do a review when that happens."

Godfreys of Hornchurch Bakery (manufacturers) - 2/5

The manufacturers element at this bakery in Ardleigh Green Road was given a two out of five for its food hygiene after an inspection on August 27.

This means that overall "improvement is necessary", however it was deemed to have "generally satisfactory" hygienic food handling and food management systems.

Godfreys declined to comment, however wanted to highlight that it was the manufacturing part of the bakery that was inspected as opposed to the shop.
