A Grade II-listed pub in Romford town centre is set for a refurbishment - including a new outdoor seating area - under new plans.

The Lamb, in Market Place, has put forward proposals to demolish its current outbuilding and replace it with a new decked outdoor seating area for customers (P1128.24).

The plans, received by Havering Council on August 15, also include the removal of part of the bar inside and replacement of the timber floor underneath.

The Romford pub is listed and dates back centuries, with Havering Libraries suggesting there has been an inn on the site since 1681.

However, GBA Designs, which submitted the application on behalf of The Lamb, insists that these refurbishment works are "minor" and will not have "any effect on the listed building".

In the planning documents, they said: "The proposals will have a neutral effect on the historic fabric of the building and a positive impact on the sustainability of (the) listed pub.

"The demolition of the modern constructed outbuilding currently used as a store is of no historic merit, and means that we can create a much-needed covered area for trade."

If plans are approved, the outdoor seating area will feature a pergola frame made from treated wood with a plastic roof.

These refurbishments could cost up to £2 million, with works expected to start in February 2025 if approved.

A decision date has been set for October 14.

This is the second set of plans for changes at The Lamb, after the pub applied to replace five signs, four brass lanterns and four floodlights in July.

These other proposals are currently undecided, with Havering Council expected to make a decision by September 17.
