Plans to renovate a main entrance of a Romford shopping centre have been approved.

Two separate planning applications were submitted to Havering Council in June (A0016.24 and P0791.24) to revamp entrance 1 of The Liberty in South Street.

Both sets of proposals - which include new illuminated signs, digital screens and entrance doors - were approved this month, with conditions that outline when the refurbishment should be completed and how bright the screens can be.

This means that the South Street entrance to The Liberty is set to get four new illuminated signs, two non-illuminated vinyl signs and two digital screens.

The plans are part of a multi-year £7million improvement budget from operating company Redical.

The initial plans included a third digital screen which was earmarked to replace the clock on the side of the tower, however this was later removed.

Conditions for this first set of proposals are that the illuminated signs should be turned off at night and should not exceed certain levels of brightness in the day, for sustainability and safety reasons.

The conditions also state that the digital screens should not have any visual effects, and "shall be designed so that in the event of breakdown they shall automatically power off to prevent any flashing error message being displayed".

This is so that they comply with highway safety and the Havering Local Plan.

Under the second set of plans, the main entrance to The Liberty will get new entrance doors and a lit aluminium ceiling system under its tower.

For the new entrance doors, the conditions require that colour scheme of black and green, decided in the plans, be stuck to, and for the ceiling system should have four circular downlights.

This part of the plans also includes the refurbishment of the tower's steel columns.

Building works for this will need to be carried out within three years, and between the hours of 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday, or 8am and 1pm at the weekend.

A further two planning applications were submitted for The Liberty - for its other street entrances and car park entrances - with Havering Council expected to make a decision on these on August 30.
