Havering's council leader has condemned "scenes of hatred and violence" across the UK and urged people in the borough to stay united.

Councillor Ray Morgon, leader of Havering Council, today (August 6) warned people considering causing problems in the borough that they will face "the full force of the law".

Earlier today, a Romford teacher said on LBC she was staying indoors after her children and six-month-old grandson experienced racism in the town.

This comes amid a wave of far-right violence in UK towns and cities.

In response to the riots, Cllr Morgon said: “I am disgusted by the scenes of hatred and violence in parts of the country in recent days.

“I urge Havering residents to stay united and warn anyone thinking about causing trouble in our borough – that we will work with police to ensure they face the full force of the law."

Cllr Morgon added that the council has been directing residents on how they can get support if they have been victim to hate crimes.

There has not been any disorder reported in Havering but four Brentwood men were charged with racially aggravated criminal damage after pig's heads were left outside schools and a youth centre last month.

Cllr Morgon said the council was working to keep the community together in his statement reacting to the UK riots.

"I have been working with all faith leaders in the borough to ensure that Havering remains a place with good community relations and cohesion," he said.

"We continue to support our most vulnerable communities during this troubling time," Cllr Morgon added.
