This week's nostalgic look back to yesteryear brings a focus on Rainham shops, with a "fascinating" collection of photos.

Among them is Powell's, a nursery furniture store in Upminster Road South and Ken's Newsagent in The Broadway.

This vintage photograph shows the shops at 29-39 Upminster Road South circa 1969-1972.

Down the road from Powell's was Flints, part of the Don Poole photo collection shared by Havering Libraries.

Donald Poole was a former Residents' Association councillor in Rainham for Hornchurch Urban District Council in 1962, according to Havering Libraries, and a founding member of the Rainham Civic Society.

Fiona Barton, commenting on Facebook, said: "Fascinating photos. Lovely to see the village in full swing with a variety of shops."

This photo shows a different collection of shops n Upminster Road South.

From left to right you can see Good Friend Chinese takeaway, Footwear Repairs, Ted's Fish Bar, Cameo, Payne's butcher and Freda Hair Fashions.

As with the above photos, they mark changes made to shops in Upminster Road South instigated by the Rainham Civic Society after it was founded in 1970, according to Havering Libraries.

Mr Gayatari newsagents in The Broadway in 1995

To the middle-right, next to the Optician, you can make out Mr Gayatari newsagent.

This view of Rainham Broadway shops dates from 1995, according to Havering Libraries.

At number 22 was a newsagent and tobacconist run by Mr Gayatari which is now listed as permanently closed.

Ken's Newsagent can be seen to the centre-left of this photo with a newspaper board from the Dagenham Post among others.
