An appeal has been launched for witnesses after three people died in a crash on the A13.
The Metropolitan Police were called to the A13 in Wennington Marshes, shortly after 10pm on July 15, to reports of a moving car crashing into a stationary one.
Earlier that day the stationary car was also involved in a crash and Essex Police answered calls at its control room given that it was close to its border.
At the scene three people were pronounced dead and a fourth was taken to hospital for treatment and was discharged with non life-threatening injuries.
The second crash reportedly happened after police were called to the initial incident, but before officers were able to arrive to the scene.
As a result, both police forces have been made subject to a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to look into the response for the first incident.
No arrests have been made at this time and an appeal has been pushed for witnesses and people with dashcam footage to come forward.
DI Julie Trodden, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This is an extremely tragic incident and my thoughts remain with the families of those who lost their loved ones.
“We are keen to speak with anyone who may have been driving along this stretch of road around 10pm on 15 July and who may have dashcam footage of the incident.”
Anyone with information should call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0208 597 4874 or message @MetCC on X, quoting 8672/15JUL.
