A nine-year-old girl has come up with a winning design for an Olympic stadium using recycled materials that has scooped £1,000 for her school.

Ava Austin, a Year 5 pupil at Hutton All Saints Primary, won first place for her creative art in a competition at Brentwood’s Baytree Shopping Centre.

The competition was inspired by the upcoming Paris Olympics for a stadium design.

Ava’s winning entry earns cash for the school and a hamper for herself from Poundland’s branch at the shopping centre.

“We’ll use the prize for much-needed learning resources for the children,” Hutton All Saints head teacher Jeanette Manookian said. “Ava designed a wonderful stadium out of recycled materials.

“Many children in the competition had clearly worked hard on their designs — we were surprised and pleased that one of our pupils had won.”

The competition attracted entries from many schools in Brentwood and surrounding areas.

But it was Ava’s colourful idea for a rugby stadium that won the judges over. It had an ‘eco’ theme, inspired by nature.

Ava was given a giant cheque for her school at a presentation for the competition exhibition being opened by the Mayor of Brentwood Mark Haigh.

Cllr Haigh said afterwards: “This is a wonderful way to celebrate the biggest sporting event in the world. The jewel in the crown is that everything is made out of recycled material.”

All entries submitted are on view at the pop-up exhibition at the Baytree centre during shopping hours, in the run-up to the 2024 Paris Games.
