The site of the former Romford Ice Rink is set to be used in a series of events for NHS staff, which includes commemorating those who died on the frontline.

Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) has announced events from July 2 to 11 on the former Romford Ice Rink near Queen's Hospital.

BHRUT said staff will take the time to commemorate NHS colleagues who have died.

July 11 will be the primary event to thank NHS staff, and will include a special breakfast, afternoon tea and an evening party. The other two events will take place on July 2 and 11.

Matthew Trainer, BRHUT chief executive, said: "Celebrating BHRUT is a great opportunity to welcome our communities in and recognise and thank our teams for the work they do caring for patients."

BHRUT applied for a premises licence on July 7 in relation to the old ice rink at Queen's Hospital in Rom Valley Way. A big white tent has since been spotted opposite the building.

This would allow for the provision of live and recorded music, dance performances, as well as the supply of alcohol.

Most of the events will take place in the marquee in front of Queen's Hospital, the trust said.

As part of "celebrating BHRUT", 1,300 children from east London schools will attend a careers fair on July 2.

On this day, pupils will be able to speak to staff across the trust about what they do and discover the qualifications needed for their dream job.

This will be followed by the "special lunch" for about 200 NHS volunteers on July 11.

A staff awards ceremony, a graduation event for those who have completed further education and training, as well as a long-service awards ceremony will take place.

Finally, a BHRUT stakeholders event will be held on July 16, aimed at supporting regeneration in east London.

"This will focus on education and employment opportunities, investing in local businesses, the environment, and addressing inequalities," the trust added.

Mr Trainer said: “We hope our local schoolchildren will be inspired to work in the NHS in the future.”

The premises license for the old ice rink site was open to feedback from June 11 to 26, which ended yesterday (June 25).
