A secondary school in Gidea Park has been highly commended by Ofsted after its latest inspection.

The Royal Liberty School on Brentwood Road was visited by the education watchdog on February 7, and was praised for its broad and ambitious curriculum, among other things.

A report published on March 20 said the school would have received an 'outstanding' rating if this was a graded inspection.

Pupils, it added, are “proud to attend the school” and valued the many opportunities they have to develop their talents and interests.

Pupils were found to be polite, respectful and mature and valued diversity and equality. The attendance at the school, the report revealed, was very high for all students as they understand the importance of coming to the school.

Inspectors noted that leaders at all levels “worked tirelessly hard” towards pupils’ success and have high expectations of their students.

A vast majority of pupils at the school, the report said, took English Baccalaureate qualifications to widen choices for their future.

The inspectors particularly highlighted the school’s unique ways of developing coding skills among pupils and teaching them challenging vocabulary like ‘ghettoisation’ in reference to Jews in Nazi Germany.

Teachers were additionally found to be passionate experts in their subjects who checked and addressed any misconceptions in the pupils’ understanding.

The safeguarding standards at the school were considered to be effective, as per the report.

The school’s support for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities, and its pastoral care delivered using heads of year, the home school support worker and the school counsellor were deemed of a high level.

A spokesperson for the school said they were thrilled with the report as it showcases the “incredible dedication and hardwork” of the staff, students and the entire school community.

They said: “We are proud to say that the report acknowledges the significant improvements we have made to our curriculum, ensuring it meets the needs of our students and prepares them for a successful future.

Headteacher Lee Raftery also expressed his pride in the school community and said the report reflects a commitment to excellence.
