An "unprovoked" fatal attack at Harold Wood Station has been branded "terrible" by a ward councillor, who has expressed his condolences.

Brian Eagling, East Havering Residents' Group councillor for Harold Wood, said he was saddened to learn a person had died at Harold Wood Station this morning (February 27).

British Transport Police (BTP) officers were called to the station at around 4.30am today (February 27), after a staff member reported a person badly hurt and lying on the floor.

The individual was found with "extensive" injuries and pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.

"What's happened is terrible," Cllr Eagling said. "Naturally we are saddened by the situation, as ward councillors, we really are.

"We've got to try to get back to normal - the quicker they can open the road off, the better for us all because we don't want to frighten anybody."

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, following the person's death. 

Harold Wood Station had been taped off and remains closed. A detour is in effect for buses.

Darren Wise, another East Havering Residents' Group councillor for Harold Wood, said he had been on his way to work at around 6.50am when he saw police tape and a white tent outside the station's entrance.

“We should all be supporting each other and letting police do their work and what they need to do," Cllr Wise said. 

“You could see there was a white tent outside the entrance of Harold Wood station. All condolences and sympathies to the family and the people around them.”

Both Harold Wood ward councillors said they have noticed an increase in crime across Havering, and Cllr Wise called for the underlying causes to be looked at.

"We always want more police, they can’t be everywhere on every street corner," he said.

Cllr Eagling echoed his views, and said he was "concerned" about the level of crime in the borough.

“I am concerned at what goes on in Havering, mainly in Romford, knowing that I was brought up in Havering - I was born here," he added.
