Two Rainham politicians have raised concerns over a junction that has caused several accident “near misses” at the entrance to a new housing development.

Havering councillors Matt Stanton and Trevor McKeever say the layout of the junction in Maiden Way and New Road, which leads to Knightswood Place estate, has been criticised by some residents.

The two Labour Beam Park ward councillors added that they had raised the issue with the council’s Highways team and housing developer Persimmon.

Cllr McKeever, who is also mayor of Havering, said: “While we understand that Persimmon and Havering have worked jointly on the plans for the junction, nevertheless we are unwilling to accept any compromise on the safety of our residents, particularly when there is only one way in and out of the estate.”

He added that the issue seemed to be caused by the narrowness of the junction entrance, and that he hoped some improvements could be put in place.

A spokesperson for Havering Council said that the councillors are liaising directly with the Highways service and that the council had nothing further to add at this time.

A spokesperson for Persimmon Homes said: “The new junction at Knightswood Place has been built in line with the approved plans, which were extensively reviewed, and subsequently signed off by highways officers from Havering Council.

“We are not aware of an increase in accidents. However, we are continuing to engage with the council and have also committed to undertake a Road Safety Audit once the site is fully complete.”
