Upminster locals are hopeful the opening of a new craft beer chain will encourage more businesses to take over empty shops.
BrewDog began welcoming customers into its latest bar last Friday (November 11) as it moved into the former NatWest building in Station Road.
Initially to open on two floors, a third-floor roof terrace and bar is also planned to launch in spring 2023.
It will also sell 70 taps of craft beer, both from BrewDog and a range of guest breweries, including local tap takeovers with Brentwood Brewery.
Following news of the launch, Jessica Townsend commented on Facebook, describing the opening as “brilliant news for our high street”.
She added that she hopes “more businesses take over the empty retail spaces”.
Geoffrey Dartford was another welcoming the news.
He said: “Looking forward to having a drink in there, looks good from the outside, it’s about time we [have] some more pubs in Upminster.”
However, the enthusiasm was not shared by all, with others wary of the number of food and drink establishments opening in the area.
Sue Vosloo said: “We don't need more pubs and takeaways, we need normal shops like we used to have, not nail shops, hairdressers, takeaways, etc. Upminster is a hole now, nearest shopping centre is Hornchurch.”
Another, Lisa Louise, asked: “Can we not have something that isn’t food or drink related?”
Rob Noon, meanwhile, simply commented: “Poor Upminster.”
Lana Copping, general manager of BrewDog Upminster, said the chain is excited to open in the town.
She added: "The building enhances BrewDog’s industrial vibe and definitely brings an iconic new bar to the high street.
"With an extensive selection of beers, and a delicious menu we look forward to welcoming the local community and visitors.”
BrewDog was founded in 2007 by James Watt and Martin Dickie. It currently has more than 100 bars throughout the world, exports into 60 countries, and has breweries in locations including Columbus in Ohio, Berlin, and Brisbane.
