An NHS trust is awaiting government approval to start work on the build of a new multi-million pound health centre in Hornchurch.
The proposed St George’s Hub is to bring health, social care and community services under one roof in new, purpose-built premises in Suttons Lane.
Contractors have started clearance and site surveys in the grounds of the old St George’s Hospital, which is soon to be demolished.

Government funding totalling £17million was announced in 2019 towards the project.
“The start of clearance and demolition work on site marks a significant milestone for the project after several years of planning," North East London Health and Care Partnership’s Zina Etheridge said. "Once we receive final approval from the government, the main building work on the hub will get under way which will be really exciting."
Work is expected to be finished by March 2024 when the centre opens for primary care, mental health and prevention services as well as early diagnostic service for cancer.
It also has space for voluntary groups, a community café, education and meeting area and a dementia-friendly sensory garden.
