A sweet shop has closed down and become an online-only business, with owners blaming “two years of roadworks” for hitting their business.
The Sweet Store on Station Lane, Hornchurch, closed on Saturday.
Co-owner Toby Clark said: “The first year we were open we were fine – that was in 2009, a year after the economic problems started – but since the roadworks started, like-for-like footfall has fallen by 60 per cent.”
Havering Council has been carrying out regeneration work in the area which it says will make Hornchurch more attractive for shoppers and businesses.
Cllr Robert Benham recently said: “Unfortunately with this type of work, there will be some disruption. The £2m programme will improve the town centre for future generations.
“We are sorry that there has been some disruption and we are working hard to minimise this.”
