It was risky business deciding to spread the Military and Flying Machines Airshow over three days this year, but the risk paid off as this year’s show was hailed a success.

“It was the best ever, said manager Keith Reynolds, Damyns Hall Aerodrome.

“It was a worry if we would get the same amount of people as normal, but it worked out well, I have never known it so busy.”

An estimated 20,000 people attended the airshow from Friday to Sunday.

Residents took advantage of the sunny weather and enjoyed a range of activities including military re-enactments, 300 miltary vehicles and tanks.

There was also plenty for the children to enjoy with bouncy castles, games, face painting and lots more.

Last year, the show’s organisers were told that the the B-17 Flying Fortress, made famous by the film Memphis Belle, could not be displayed because of Olympic flying restrictions.

Other aircraft taking part in the event, also had to be fitted with tracking devices so that authorities could monitor them due to the games.

But visitors were able to enjoy a full air display this year.

“It was a showstopper, said Keith.

“It always is, everyone just stops what they are doing and looks up at the sky and it was brilliant.”

The show started off five years ago and Keith says that it has undergone a number of changes to become the success it is today.

“It started off as a real military show, with just a couple of miltary vehicles.

“Now it has grown beyond recognition and the organisers have realised that for it to continue to be a successful it has to appeal to everyone.”

He added: “Anyone can enjoy the show now, you can come along and have a fun day even if you aren’t into military shows.”
