Hornchurch Animal Rescue said they are in “desperate need of help” for permanent homes for these pooches.

The plea comes ahead of the charity’s fifth anniversary and Christmas, which is their busiest time of year.

Charity founder Donna Evans said: “We estimate that the numbers of animals needing help has doubled since we started and since the end of the summer rehoming has slowed down considerably.”

She said suitable foster homes were becoming more difficult to find as more people were working longer hours, but despite this homes were needed urgently ahead of Christmas as they prepare for their busiest period of the year.

And they were looking in particular for child and pet-free homes for initial assessments to rehome these dogs, two of which were strays and one was abused.

The dogs were claimed after they ended up at the local council pound or kennel and would have been put down if no one took them in.

Donna said: “The large breed dogs tend to be overlooked in favour of the small cute and fluffy types as they do need a particular type of owner.

“These three specialist dogs are wonderful but seemingly unpopular dogs and we are desperate to get them out of kennels and into homes for Christmas.

“We also have an older black and white cat that has been constantly overlooked in favour of kittens and the more unusual coloured felines.”

Donna said that the charity is completely self funded through donations from the public, and despite her family’s and friends’ fundraising efforts they were struggling to pay the £1,000 a month kennel bill for the dogs.

She added: “Our very small team is exhausted. We would love for the people of Havering to donate or better still hold a fundraising event for us. A cake sale, sponsored event, auction or maybe street collecting for us.”
